Main directions of practical and scientific activities of neurophthalmology department
Clinical diagnostics of neuro-ophthalmic pathology, in particular, optic neuropathy of inflammatory, vascular, toxic genesis, compression optic neuropathy, oculomotor disorders in trauma, vascular diseases and brain tumor. Differential diagnosis between eye pathology and diseases of the central nervous system.
Promising areas of work of the department are the improvement of methods for early diagnosis of lesions of the visual pathway in vascular diseases and brain tumor, the search and development of new effective methods of rehabilitation treatment of patients with primary and secondary optic nerve atrophy of various origins. The introduction of automatic static perimetry into routine examination is a promising area of scientific and practical activity of the department.
Information for Patients
In the neuro-ophthalmological department examine inpatients of the departments of the Romodanov Neurosurgery Institute and outpatient from the policlinic department of the Institute of Neurosurgery. Outpatient diagnostic services are provided to patients of other medical institutions.
List of basic diagnostic and treatment options
1. Diagnosis of diseases of the visual pathway in trauma, vascular diseases and brain tumor.
2. Differential diagnosis of damage of the visual pathway in eye diseases, endocrine, neurological and neurosurgical diseases.
3. Treatment of optic nerve diseases (traumatic, ischemic optic neuropathy; optic neuritis, retrobulbar neuritis, optic atrophy)
4. Diagnostics: computer perimetry, visometry, ophthalmoscopy, biomicroscopy, ophthalmometry, exophthalmometry, electrophysiological methods.
Information for Doctors
The Neuro-ophthalmological Department provides training courses/traineeship for specialists in functional diagnosis, ophthalmologists, pediatric ophthalmologists, neurosurgeons, neurologists, pediatric neurologists, rehabilitation therapists, including clinical residents, internship doctors and researchers.
Training courses are conducted by the leading specialists of the neuro-ophthalmological department of the Institute of Neurosurgery, who have extensive experience in the diagnosis of diseases of the visual pathway in neurosurgical and neurological diseases. The lecture program includes issues of anatomy and physiology of the visual pathway, ophthalmological symptoms in the topical diagnosis of the central nervous system lesions. These clinical tasks are combined and provided with a detailed acquaintance with the principles and modern methods of examination of the visual pathway, the clinic of damage and differential diagnosis of diseases of the visual pathway, the principles of rehabilitation treatment. The practical part of the courses is passes in the departments of the Institute of Neurosurgery.
We pay attention of doctors to the early signs of a disease of the central nervous system, the technique of neuro-ophthalmological examination of patients, the formulation of the final diagnosis, treatment tactics, taking into account the data of neuroimaging. Duration of training courses are 4 weeks (122 hours).
