Andrii Hryhorovych Sirko – Honorary Professor of the Romodanov Neurosurgery Institute
Andrii Hryhorovych Sirko is a Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor, Honored Doctor of Ukraine, National Legend of Ukraine, President of the Ukrainian Association of Neurosurgeons, Head of the Cerebral Neurosurgery Center at the I.I. Mechnikov Dnipropetrovsk Regional Clinical Hospital, and Professor at the Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery of Dnipro State Medical University. After graduating with honors from Dnipropetrovsk State Medical Academy in 1998, he completed his internship in neurosurgery and successively went through all stages of professional development — from neurosurgeon to head of one of the largest neurosurgical centers in Ukraine. His total clinical experience exceeds 28 years, while his academic and teaching experience spans more than 23 years. A special place in Professor Sirko’s professional activity is occupied by the problem of severe traumatic brain injury. His doctoral dissertation was devoted to intracranial hypertension in severe traumatic brain injury, and his subsequent scientific and clinical work has made an important contribution to the development of modern neurotraumatology. Professor Sirko has made an especially significant contribution to the development of military neurosurgery. Since the beginning of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine in 2014, he has become one of the country’s leading specialists in the treatment of combat-related traumatic brain injuries. Under the exceptionally challenging conditions of wartime, he has accumulated unique clinical experience in treating wounded military personnel and civilians with gunshot and blast injuries to the brain. Professor Sirko’s scientific authority is demonstrated by his substantial academic output. He is the author and co-author of more than 300 scientific publications, monographs, and chapters in specialized publications. His work has been published in leading international journals, including the Journal of Neurosurgery, Journal of Neurosurgery: Case Lessons, Journal of Neurotrauma, Military Medicine, Operative Neurosurgery, and other authoritative publications. Of particular importance are his studies devoted to combat-related neurotrauma and outcomes of treatment for injuries of the central nervous system. Andrii Hryhorovych Sirko is an international member of leading neurosurgical organizations, including EANS, AANS, CNS, and SBNS. In 2026, he was elected to the Neurotrauma Committee of the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies (EANS) and the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies (WFNS). Since 2016, he has represented Ukraine on the WFNS Military Neurosurgery Committee, actively advocating for the interests of Ukrainian neurosurgery at the international level and facilitating the integration of Ukrainian experience into the global professional neurosurgical community. The high international standing of the scientist is further demonstrated by his participation as an invited lecturer and faculty member at major international neurosurgical forums, including the Congress of the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies (EANS), the Congress of the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies (WFNS), and the annual Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS). Professor Sirko has also made a significant contribution to the development of international scientific communication. He serves as an Assistant Editor of Operative Neurosurgery, one of the world’s leading neurosurgical journals, is a member of the Editorial Board of the Ukrainian Neurosurgical Journal, reviews manuscripts for leading international journals, and actively contributes to shaping the contemporary scientific agenda in the fields of neurosurgery and neurotrauma. An important component of Andrii Hryhorovych Sirko’s professional activity is medical education and teaching. For more than two decades, he has trained neurosurgeons, contributed to postgraduate medical education, and participated in the professional development and continuing education of specialists. In view of his outstanding scientific achievements, many years of clinical and teaching activity, international recognition, exceptional contribution to the development of military neurosurgery and neurotraumatology, training of scientific and clinical specialists, and significant personal contribution to strengthening the reputation of Ukrainian neurosurgery on the international stage, Professor Andrii Hryhorovych Sirko unquestionably deserves the title of Honorary Professor of the State Institution “Romodanov Neurosurgery Institute of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine.” |
