Dirk Rades – Honorary Professor of the Romodanov Neurosurgery Institute

By the decision of the Academic Council of the Romodanov Neurosurgery Institute dated September 26, 2025 (Minutes No. 17), the academic title of “Honorary Professor” was conferred upon Professor Dirk Rades.

This honorary title recognizes his many years of contributions to the development of neuro-oncology and radiation oncology, his significant role in improving treatment methods for central nervous system tumors, as well as his fruitful international collaboration with Ukrainian specialists. Joint scientific projects and clinical studies involving Professor Rades contribute to enhancing the quality of medical care in Ukraine and strengthening the scientific potential of our country.

Professor Dirk Rades is the Head of the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Lübeck, University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein, Lübeck Campus, Germany.

Thanks to the collaboration with Professor Dirk Rades, the State Institution “Romodanov Neurosurgery Institute of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine” is implementing a strategic partnership with University Hospitals of the European Union aimed at strengthening research capacities and promoting the internationalization of science.

With the support of Professor Dirk Rades, in January 2023 the State Institution “Romodanov Neurosurgery Institute of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine” and the University of Lübeck (Germany) signed a General Agreement to expand relations and cooperation between the two institutions in developing scientific and cultural exchange in the fields of medical sciences, education, research, and other socially significant activities.

Within the framework of this agreement, under the leadership of Professor Dirk Rades, the scientific project “Potential Role of Hypofractionated Radiation Therapy for the Personalization of Treatment in Patients with Glioblastoma” (2022–2023) was implemented through a grant under the “Scholarship within the framework of the emergency aid program to support refugee scientists from Ukraine” of the University of Lübeck, Germany. The project was carried out by Oksana Volodymyrivna Zemskova, oncologist, radiation oncologist, senior researcher, Doctor of Medical Sciences at the State Institution “Romodanov Neurosurgery Institute of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine.”

As a result of the scientific collaboration between O.V. Zemskova and Professor Dirk Rades, 11 articles were published between 2023 and 2025, including papers in journals indexed in Scopus and ranked in the 1st and 2nd quartiles (Q1–Q2).

On the initiative of Professor Dirk Rades, in 2022 the State Institution “Romodanov Neurosurgery Institute of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine” became a network partner of the German–Danish Interreg scientific project “HeAT. Technologies for Improving the Health of Elderly People.” The project is ongoing.

Professor Dirk Rades is also involved in the scientific project “Determining the Platelet Proteome Profile to Assess the Potential Role of Their Secretory Products as Non-Invasive Circulating Biomarkers.” The project began in 2023. It is carried out by Larysa Dmytrivna Liubych, senior researcher, Doctor of Biological Sciences at the State Institution “Romodanov Neurosurgery Institute of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine.” The project is being conducted at the Department of Translational Oncology and Biobanking of the University of Lübeck with the use of mass spectrometry methods, supported by a grant within the “Scholarship within the framework of the emergency aid program to support refugee scientists from Ukraine” of the University of Lübeck, Germany.

Professor Dirk Rades has received numerous honorary titles and awards that attest to his significant contributions to the field of radiation oncology.

Awards:

Among the awards received by Professor Dirk Rades are the annual prize of the German Cancer Society for clinical research in radiation oncology, which he received in 2008, and the Research Medal of the Schleswig-Holstein Cancer Society in 2018. He has also served as a visiting professor at the University of Bergen (Norway) and a guest lecturer at Harvard Medical School (USA).
