At the Romodanov Neurosurgery Institute of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, the Academic Council has established a procedure for awarding the title of “Honorary Professor.” This title serves as a form of recognition for an individual’s significant contributions to the development of neurosurgical science, as well as active collaboration with the Institute of Neurosurgery.

The academic title of “Honorary Professor” has been awarded to the distinguished neurosurgeon Henry Marsh for his outstanding contribution to the advancement of global and Ukrainian neurosurgery, his long-standing cooperation with the Institute of Neurosurgery, and his tireless educational activities. This decision reflects deep respect for Professor Marsh and acknowledges his exceptional role in shaping the modern neurosurgical school.

Henry Marsh is a world-renowned British neurosurgeon and one of the pioneers of performing brain surgery on awake patients (awake craniotomy). After completing his medical education at the Royal Free Hospital in London, he worked as a consultant at St George’s Hospital, specializing in the treatment of brain tumors and complex neurosurgical procedures.

He is known for his humanistic approach to medicine, his openness about the challenges of the profession, and his emphasis on the importance of honesty regarding surgical mistakes. Since the early 1990s, he has been actively involved in the development of neurosurgery in Ukraine, where he has operated alongside Ukrainian surgeons, trained specialists, and helped establish modern surgical conditions.

His work in Ukraine became the foundation for the documentary film The English Surgeon. Marsh is also the author of several bestselling books on neurosurgery — Do No Harm, Admissions, and And Finally — in which he candidly shares his professional and personal experiences.

His contribution extends beyond surgical innovation; he has helped transform attitudes toward medicine, portraying it as a profession requiring not only technical mastery but also profound empathy.
