Israel Melamed – Honorary Professor of the Romodanov Neurosurgery Institute

By resolution of the Academic Council of the Romodanov Neurosurgery Institute dated 26 June 2026 (Minutes No. 9), the honorary academic title of Honorary Professor was conferred upon Professor Israel Melamed.

Professor Israel Melamed is one of the most distinguished representatives of the modern Israeli school of neurosurgery, an eminent scientist, neurosurgeon, and educator whose professional achievements have received broad international recognition. For many years, he has successfully combined clinical practice, scientific research, and teaching, making a significant contribution to the advancement of neurosurgery worldwide.

Professor Melamed has served for many years as the Head of the Department of Neurosurgery at Soroka Medical Center in Beersheba, Israel, one of the country’s largest university-affiliated medical centers. He also holds the position of Clinical Professor at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev.

In 1983, Professor Melamed graduated from Tashkent Medical University. Between 1990 and 1999, he completed his residency training at Soroka Medical Center, where he subsequently continued his career as a senior neurosurgeon in the Department of Neurosurgery. He also received specialized training in minimally invasive neurosurgery at Johannes Gutenberg University Hospital, Germany.

Professor Melamed’s scientific and clinical interests encompass a broad range of contemporary neurosurgical disciplines, including neuro-oncology, minimally invasive and endoscopic neurosurgery, skull base surgery, vascular neurosurgery, traumatic brain injury, spinal disorders, and hydrocephalus. Under his leadership, advanced diagnostic and therapeutic technologies for diseases of the central nervous system have been introduced in accordance with the highest international standards.

Professor Israel Melamed is the author and co-author of numerous scientific publications in leading international peer-reviewed journals. He is a member of several international professional societies and expert groups and an active participant in scientific forums, congresses, and symposia. His research has focused on major challenges in neurotrauma, neuro-oncology, cerebrovascular diseases, the advancement of neurosurgical technologies, and improving treatment outcomes for patients with disorders of the nervous system.

Of particular importance is Professor Melamed’s longstanding collaboration with the Ukrainian neurosurgical community and the Romodanov Neurosurgery Institute of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine. Through his personal commitment and active participation, numerous educational and scientific initiatives have been implemented to promote the exchange of knowledge and clinical experience between Ukrainian and Israeli neurosurgeons. Professor Melamed has repeatedly delivered lectures and scientific presentations for Ukrainian physicians and has actively participated in international conferences, seminars, and hands-on workshops dedicated to contemporary neurosurgical techniques.

On 6 July 2018, the Romodanov Neurosurgery Institute hosted the Ukrainian-Israeli Seminar “Minimally Invasive Surgery of the Brain and Spinal Cord,” at which Professor Melamed was one of the keynote speakers. He also shared his expertise with young investigators of the Institute during the 3rd Annual Conference of Young Scientists in 2025.

In the face of the current challenges confronting Ukraine’s healthcare system, the international support and professional solidarity consistently demonstrated by Professor Israel Melamed are of exceptional importance. His contribution has played a significant role in advancing medical science, supporting the education of young specialists, strengthening international professional cooperation, and facilitating the implementation of innovative neurosurgical techniques in Ukraine.
